Maidstone East to Victoria: the main route
This is the workhorse. Southeastern runs 52 direct trains a day between Maidstone East and London Victoria, covering the 32 miles with an average journey of about 1 hour 7 minutes and a fastest service of 1 hour 3 minutes (Southeastern). Trainline’s timetable data shows much the same picture, with the quickest runs at about an hour and a distance of 32 miles (Trainline).
What it means for you: an hour each way is the honest baseline for a Maidstone commute, and the difference between the fastest and slowest trains on the timetable is real. If your work pattern allows it, picking the faster departures saves the best part of an hour a week.
Getting to the City
There is no all-day direct City service, but there are a few useful trains:
- Blackfriars: Southeastern runs 2 direct trains on weekday mornings, leaving Maidstone East at around 05:52 and 06:52 and taking about 1 hour 13 minutes (Trainline). These suit early starts in the City or at Blackfriars itself; miss them and the answer is Victoria plus the Tube, or a change en route.
- Cannon Street: Trainline lists 2 direct trains a day, the first leaving around 05:54, with the fastest timing shown from 50 minutes (Trainline). Again, these are edge-of-the-day services rather than a turn-up-and-go route.
What it means for you: if your office is in the City and your hours are flexible, the early directs are a genuine shortcut. For a standard 9 to 5 the realistic route is Victoria and the District or Circle line, and it is worth pricing the Travelcard season against the plain London Terminals one for that reason (see the fares section below).
Maidstone West: the Medway Valley line and the Highspeed option
Maidstone West and Maidstone Barracks sit on the Medway Valley line. The core service links Strood (38 trains a day, fastest 17 minutes) and Paddock Wood (around 35 trains a day, about 22 minutes), with a handful of trains running through to Tonbridge (Trainline).
The interesting part for London travellers: around 3 direct Southeastern Highspeed trains a day run from Maidstone West to St Pancras International via Strood, joining the HS1 line for a journey of about 52 to 54 minutes. The direct departures listed run in the morning peak, between about 05:51 and 07:54 (Trainline).
What it means for you: if you work near King’s Cross, St Pancras or the Eurostar, the morning Highspeed direct beats the Victoria route on time. It costs more (the season figures are below), and outside those peak directs you would change at Strood, so it works best as a deliberate choice rather than a default.
How early and how late can you travel?
On the Victoria route, Southeastern lists the first direct train at 05:28 and the last at 23:13 (Southeastern); Trainline shows earlier connecting options from 04:26 with the same 23:13 last service (Trainline).
What it means for you: those are the departures from Maidstone East, so for a night out in London the number that matters is the last train back from Victoria, and it is worth checking on the day you travel, because engineering work regularly changes late-evening services, as the early-August bus replacements show. The wider picture helps here: regulated rail fares in England are frozen until March 2027, the first freeze in around 30 years, and the freeze covers standard class season tickets, anytime and off-peak tickets (National Rail). So these prices are not due a March jump this cycle.
What it means for you: the basic London Terminals season covers Victoria, Blackfriars and Cannon Street but is not valid on the Highspeed trains. If you want the St Pancras directs from Maidstone West, that is the £6,748 season. If you use the Tube daily, the Zones 1 to 6 Travelcard at £7,200 can beat buying Tube fares on top.
