One Maidstone has not published a 2026 switch-on date. The last two were both the third Thursday of November in Jubilee Square, free, from 4.30pm to 7pm.

Maidstone’s Christmas lights switch-on has no announced 2026 date. As of 5 September the event’s organiser, One Maidstone, still carries last year’s listing, and Maidstone Borough Council’s newsroom has published nothing about Christmas at all. If you are trying to book the evening off, this page explains what is known, what is not, and when the date usually lands.

What is confirmed

The event exists and One Maidstone runs it. The business improvement district says on its own events page that it “creates, funds and delivers a range of Town Centre events, including the annual Christmas Lights Switch On”, along with free school-holiday entertainment and Maidfest. The lights and the switch-on are paid for by town centre businesses through the BID levy, not by the council.

The venue has been settled for years: Jubilee Square, ME14 1SA, the open space beside the Town Hall on the High Street. It has been free to attend every year, with no ticket.

What is not confirmed

Everything else. One Maidstone’s Christmas Lights Switch On page is still dated 20th Nov 2025 to 20th Nov 2025 and still reads “Join us on Thursday 20th November”. Its main events listing runs no further forward than 9 September 2026. Nothing on news.maidstone.gov.uk mentions the switch-on, the lights or the festive programme.

That is normal rather than worrying. In 2025 the date was being publicised about a week ahead, and in 2024 the first coverage came the morning after. A mid-October or early-November announcement would be in keeping with both.

The date to pencil in, and why

We are not going to invent a date, but the pattern is consistent enough to plan around. The last two switch-ons were both the third Thursday in November:

The third Thursday of November 2026 is 19 November. Treat that as our inference from two years of the same pattern, not as a published fact, and check back here before you commit to it. We will update this page the moment One Maidstone confirms.

What the evening usually involves

The 2025 running order, as One Maidstone published it, is the best guide to what a 2026 event would look like. Town centre entertainment began at 4.30pm with mascots and photo opportunities, a stage show of live music and performances started at 5pm, and the whole thing built to the switch-on and finished at 7pm.

Two other things have been constant. kmfm co-hosts, with its presenters running the stage. And the cast of the Hazlitt Theatre pantomime appears: the Dick Whittington company in 2025 and the Cinderella company in 2024. This year’s panto is Beauty and the Beast, which opens on 28 November, so its cast would be in rehearsal rather than performing on switch-on night.

The Mayor of Maidstone has pushed the button in past years, and Father Christmas attends. Crowds have been reported in the thousands, with earlier events described as drawing as many as 5,000 people.

Parking and getting in

Jubilee Square sits on the High Street, so the town centre car parks are the obvious option, and the switch-on falls on a weekday evening when Maidstone’s on-street charges have already stopped. No road closure has been published for the event. In past years the High Street around Jubilee Square has been pedestrianised for it in the normal way rather than by a special traffic order.

Also on in the town centre

Jubilee Square runs a general market every Friday and Saturday under Pitch Markets and Events, so the square is in use most weekends through December regardless of what happens with a dedicated Christmas market. We have not been able to verify a 2026 Christmas market date from a first-party source: Visit Maidstone’s listing for one now returns a 404, and we are not going to repeat a date we cannot stand up.
